The fix is located approx 6-10 mi out over South China Sea and approx 30 mi NE of Da Nang. Within minutes after the emergency, both radio and radar contact was lost.

A/C was out on a night SLAR/IR mission in Laos when it was hit by flak and .51 ground fire. Pilot shut down the left engine due to oil leak, jettisoned the external tanks and was RTB to Phu Bai. While approaching Phu Bai, right engine was shut down due to overspeed and crew ejected A/C. Pilot's ejection seat malfunctioned and he fell to earth still strapped to the seat. OB initially impacted the roof of the Phu Bai airport control tower and onto the concrete ramp partially hanging by parachute cords that tangled in the tower's antennas.

After aiding the team and being relieved by another A/C, the plane back to Phu Bai. The weather was bad and the pilot reported at 1940 hours that he was lost and the weather was worsening. A/Cwas not equipped to fly IMC. Based on the direction the A/C told them it was flying, the radar station advised it to climb because of mountains in the area. No further transmissions were heard.

Sometime between 1400-1430 hrs, A/C was making a series of turns close to ground in mountainous terrain when it struck trees and ground on a heading 315 deg and a 45 deg angle approx 21nm SW of Da Nang. Impact caused A/C to either spin or cartwheel and come to rest 180 deg from its flight path.

The flight departed Nha Trang at approx 1430 hours to complete the north courier route, making their last stop at Cheo Reo to pick up a messenger courier. Upon departing Cheo Reo, they contacted the MACV compound at that location, stating that they were leaving the Cheo Reo freq and switching over to Pleiku Center. No further communication was established. Wreckage was discovered 07SEP67 on Dragon Mountain.

A/C was escorting a Vietnamese Army convoy near Bao Loc. At 1020 hours, the convoy came under heavy AW from a VC battalion. Chock called for supporting arty fire and air strikes, but realized that more immediate action was necessary to save the vulnerable ground force. The A/C was only armed with 4 marking rockets, he elected to attack an insurgent strongpoint and draw fire from the besieged convoy. A/C received intense ground fire, but was able to destroy the VC position on his second strike. As A/C began a 3rd strike on enemy the aircraft was raked by ground fire, which mortally wounded him, and caused the plane to crash.
