The Rattlers were on an afternoon scramble with the LZ being a laterite area. The second V of 5 was taking off when the lead ship put it back on the ground. A/C was in the #3 slot (right side) behind lead and in IFR conditions (ground dust) did not know that lead stopped. A/C flew into the rotor system of lead ship. |

According to AC, the A/C never received hostile fire before impact. The RMI had pre-cessed during flight after being caged on preflight and they had just received a H&I fire mission to the west of An Khe from Hard Anvil, directed pilot to fly west. In reality they flew more S-SW and flew into the mountain SW of An Khe. |
